Filmmaking in Africa - Jeremy Nathan

Jeremy Nathan shows some clips from DV8 which is a production company trying to deviate from the normal production approach. The most interesting thing about South Africa is that there seems to be the chance to have that area of the world leap ahead embracing new technologies that the already modern world will have a harder time with because of the difficulty of transitioning from an old system. I get the impression that in some ways they really have no old system. So if film distribution is becoming affordable then Africa seems to have audiences that want the films they are making and it all works out.

That whole dynamic is yet another reason for a democratic playing field. Because if a film comes out of Africa and does well in Africa, there should be no friction preventing that film from also doing well in other countries. Wikipedia style subtittling available via DotSub.com can allow all countries to foreign films with out any cost to translation. And a universal license put on a film in south Africa that works with the film industry they have there but is scalable to work in the US if a film should blow up is really key. I know that's ambitious but I keep saying that a teenager in Zimbobway should be able to post a film that might blow up and with-in a few days it could have demand all over the world to be in theaters and next thing you know it's booked and people that want to see it are notified and factor that into their evenings plans. This could eventually happen very quickly and maybe all in one days time once a system for this all has matured.
